Does Every Home Improvement Contractor Need a Website?

If you’re a contractor looking to grow your business, you need a website. While you won't see results overnight, building a solid professional website is an important investment in the long-term success of your construction business.

Important Website Criteria

First, you want to choose the right domain name. It should be similar to the name of your company – so people can find your website when they do an online search.

Second, make sure that your website is mobile-friendly. If someone looks at your website on their cell phone or tablet, is all of the content readable?

Third, is your contact information easy to find? It should be in an obvious place on almost every single page of your website. Make sure that your homepage includes the most important information about your company. This includes your address, hours of operation, phone number, email address, and the services you provide.

Fourth, you should make sure there is a visual component to your website. A picture's worth a thousand words, isn't it? A whole photo gallery is even better. Prospective customers want to see real pictures of the work that you have done. Before and after pictures are particularly good. Videos are helpful too. They should all be professional-quality though. Grainy cell phone photos are not going to cut it. In some cases, you may even think about hiring a professional photographer.

How Do I Build a Website?

There are many DIY platforms out there for building an affordable website. If you are not tech-savvy, you may also consider hiring a professional web design company. There are even companies that specialize in designing websites for contractors in particular.

Building your website is only the first step though. Now, you need traffic. How are you going to get your website in front of potential customers?

Optimizing Your Contractor Website

Contractors can benefit greatly from investing time and money in SEO (also known as search engine optimization). Wouldn’t it be great if your site ranked highly for valuable keyword searches such as “best local contractors" or "construction companies near me”? If you have an awesome website, you can improve your chances of turning these website visitors into paying customers.

SEO takes work though! You won't rank #1 by writing one article. You have to be ready to invest time in writing regular blog posts, doing keyword research, testing new page titles, and keeping up with SEO trends. If you don't feel up to the task, there are SEO agencies that can help you out. If you are not quite ready to hire a SEO professional, this is a great DIY resource for SEO beginners.
