Window Cleaning Tips

Sometimes you don't need a professional window washer to come and clean your entire home but you do need to get the fingerprints off the sliding glass door before the company arrives. Here are a few window cleaning tips to help you get that done as easily as possible.

1. The cleaning product I use is called Ettore Super Concentrate. It's bio-degradable and simple to use. Two tablespoons in a gallon of water. For years I used to mix my own but this stuff is so great and so easy that I use it all the time now. It's available at just about any hardware store

2. Use a squeegee. For simple household use you can pick one up at just about any hardware store. I would suggest one with an 8" blade - big enough to do the work but not so large as to be unwieldy. Almost any hardware store will have it.

3. Give the window a vigorous scrub with a solution-soaked sponge then start the squeegee at the top edge and pull down with light pressure. Let the squeegee do the work. Wipe the squeegee blade with a dry towel and repeat until the window is done.

4. Using a dry lint-free towel, wipe the entire perimeter of the window to remove any edge-film left by the squeegee blade and you're done.

* IMPORTANT NOTE: Watch Out For Your Carpeting, Walls and Furniture ! ! ! Generally, when a homeowner cleans their windows they use some sort of cloth or paper towel that absorbs the window cleaning solution as they clean the window. Using a squeegee is different. It wipes the water from the window instead of absorbing it and that water can be very, very dirty. Depending on how dirty your window is, you may want to give the window a quick clean with a towel first to get off most of the grime. Then get out your squeegee and go to work.
