Rung By Rung - Ladder Safety

With Summer here, Do It Yourself homeowners will be working on the outside of their homes. While many jobs require only ground-level duties, others involve scaling of ladders to reach gutters, top spouts, and roofs. Each year, over 165,000 Emergency Room visits are attributable to ladder falls and incidents. Some tips to keep in mind:

-Make sure the ladder you’re using supports both your own weight and that of any planned materials to be hauled to and from the raised surface

-Secure all locking parts, braces, and shoe supports, regardless of expected time duration for ladder use; Many incidents occur during those “five minute” jobs

-Set up extension ladders at a 75-degree angle for maximum support and scale/descend ability

-Keep your body centered between the rungs as often as possible; Leaning and shifting body weight can easily knock the ladder off balance

-Any ground below the ladder should be stable

-NEVER stand on the top rung or step; Grasp the top rung with your hands to stabilize yourself while on lower rungs

Maintaining safe practices while working on your home or business makes for easier, more efficient job completion.
