Questions & Answers
Q: What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a company like yours?
A: A General Contractor, Construction Manager, or other construction entity is engaged to construct something. The Contractor may have on staff a person(s) that is considered a “designer” (training of individuals varies from state to state), or may subcontract this part of the work to a draftsperson, CADD Operator, Designer or an “Architect”. An Architect or engineer is a person required by law to be registered in the state of practice with the government. To say one is an Architect without having appropriate registration is illegal. Architects attend college for 5 years minimum, apprentice for three years under a registered practitioner, and finally take a test to become licensed. This test is 12 hours in length and runs approximately four days, and determines the Architect’s knowledge of history, codes, site, architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical systems. To become licensed, an architect must successfully pass these tests. In some states the Architect and Engineers become the responsible party and report back to the municipal inspector for projects which are considered to be “of a more complex nature than a one or two Family”. The architect and or engineer’s role is to over see the efforts of the contractor as an agent of the owner and in the capacity of maintaining the laws, and providing insight in some instances to unusual building conditions. This is called controlled construction. This occurs in areas prone to natural disasters such as hurricanes heavy snows, or earth quakes.

Q: What is the most common type of project or service your company provides?
A: Building design. By far the firm designs more single family homes than commercial projects in a single year. The firm typically has in design at least one commercial project and several single family homes. Costs on commercial projects exceeds any 3 single family residences at any one time. On large commercial projects in excess of $3 million staff is intentionally cross trained to allow us to staff up or outsource work.

Q: In what ways is your company environmentally friendly?
A: We design based on our client requirements and will use sustainable practices, renovate existing whole structures utilizing what exists and parts of environmentally systems such as solar, energy efficient building envevlopes, to alternative power, heating and cooling methods.

My wife and I hired d.a.Kinsella Company to renovate our house, a 1955 ranch-style house with 3 bedrooms, one bath, kitchen, and living/dining room that we moved into in 1995. We had been looking to add a second bathroom and had originally worked with an architect from NH to do a modest front and rear addition. The architect withdrew from the job and recommended David Kinsella. David was very accessible by email or phone before, during, and after the work. In summary, David Kinsella provided the creativity to design a renovation plan that was truly transforming for our house and Kinsella Company was then able to see the plan through to successful completion.

David was an absolute pleasure to work on our home addition project. He showed us many options and floorplans that would work for our budget. His professionalism and ability to work in a timely fashion was on point. Their staff is very friendly and kind, they even worked around our tough schedules. I would definitely hire him as an architect for future projects!

I have had the pleasure of working with Dave Kinsella on a renovation project for a business venture called The Space, a recording and rehearsal studio in Lowell Massachusetts. It was an ambitious project and we bid the job out to several architectural firms in the area. Of all the firms we approached, we found Dave’s company, d. a. kinsella company, to be the best fit for the project. Dave was enthused by our project, willing to listen to suggestions, and was priced competitively. After careful analysis, he came up with the initial design, and architectural plans which required very little tweaking for final acceptance. Dave also acted as a consultant as to the procedures and requirements for filing permits and securing inspections.

I would recommend Dave highly for any such project and look forward to working with him on our next project.
