What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a company like yours?
|

A:

I would tell them that they should go about hiring a contractor in the same way as they would if they were hiring a nanny or babysitter for their children. A contractor provides a service in the same way as a nanny or babysitter. When hiring someone to watch your children you would make sure that they are licensed, qualified, responsible and capable of doing the job. You would find out everything you could by asking questions of the babysitter or nanny. You would seek out references and talk to anyone who they have worked with before. You would make sure that you felt comfortable with them and that they were honest and trustworthy. You would also find out if they were comfortable with you and with doing the job.

Our most common service that we perform is excavation. We excavate for foundations, utilities , septics, etc

When we do a project we recycle all materials that we encounter. The loam and dirt gets stockpiled in our yard and we screen and make loam or gravel out of it for future projects. Any concrete or asphalt the we encounter we crush it and make gravel out of it for re use. Any stumps or trees are brought to a recycling facility

The owners Bill and Glenn Barrows have superior knowledge in the field of heavy and highway construction. They both worked at a very early age for their father as laborers in his bridge building company. They worked their way through college and both graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology with a BS in Civil Engineering. They both became superintendents on multi million dollar bridge projects. Eventually they both became project managers and were responsible for running the jobs as well as estimating for new work. When their father retired they both started Barrows Contracting Inc together. They decided to take all of their knowledge in the heavy highway field of construction and focus it on smaller residential, commercial, excavation and grading projects. It is this knowledge, professionalism and the owners "Old School" working philosophy that distinguishes it above the rest of the competition.

When can you start work! My answer is that once I receive a contract with a third down payment for scheduling materials that I will schedule the work two weeks from receiving the contract.

We just installed a foundation and did all the site work for a 16000 sf building in Hopkinton. There was many challenges on this project but probably the most challenging was dealing with the rock and keeping the project under budget. There was a lot of ledge and a lot of rock that had to be removed and then stockpiled. This material then had to be removed from the site. This is a very costly process but I was able to do it through a couple of subcontractors. They processed and took the rock and I even got some material back from them. The owners were delighted.
