What is a Small Business?
By ProMatcher Staff

Defining Small Business

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), small businesses make up 99.7% of U.S. employer firms. That means there are almost 30 million small businesses in the United States. Sounds impressive, right? It almost seems too good to be true.

Well, we decided to take a closer look at their definition of small business. Although size standards vary by industry, the SBA assigns the term “small business” to most companies that have under 500 employees or bring in less than $7.5 million in annual receipts. Small seems pretty big in this case, doesn’t it?

We're Talking about (Really) Small Business.

According to the SBA, businesses with less than 10 employees are actually considered “microbusinesses”. These companies represent the vast majority of small businesses in the United States. Microsbusinesses account for over 75% of all employer firms (and almost 11% of total private-sector employment). We love that the little guys are doing a lot of heavy lifting.

There’s a big difference between a small startup with a handful of employees and an established company with several hundred employees. Both businesses can play a vital role in the economy, but each faces a unique set of business challenges.

We believe that all small business owners, no matter how small, have the potential to make a big difference. Small business is responsible for a significant part of our economy. Small business is also responsible for much of our innovation and creativity.
