Water Damage - What to Do Until Help Arrives

Water damage can be created by many sources. It can come from a sudden break in a water pipe or a major storm. There are several steps you can take to save time and money until professional help arrives.

Turn The Water Off. You need to know where your main water cut off is for the house and the one between the street and you home. The faster you stop the water the less damage you will have.

Use aluminun foil or blocks. Places squares of alumin foil or furniture blocks under the legs of all furniture if possible.

Remove The Excess Water. You want to remove as much of the excess water that you can from hard surfaces by mopping and blotting. If you have feet of water standing in the room call for professional water removal help as fast as you can.

You do not want to turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet. Additional damage can be caused by turning on fixtures. Do not poke at areas where the ceiling is sagging due to water build up. These areas should be avoided until help arives.

You do not want to use a vacum cleaner, do not touch outlets, plugs, or operate electrical items. Avoid all electrial items that have been exposed to water. Electricty and water do not mix well. Do not try to mitigate the damage without the help of a professional.
