Painting Exterior Bricks: A short Guide

Are you planning to paint the exterior brick wall of your house with a brand new look? Take some advice before proceeding on your own.

The following step by step guide will assist you with an inexpensive yet long-lasting DIY:

Step 1

Thoroughly wash-down the wall and make sure that all sorts of grimes and dirt is completely removed. Use pressure washer for the purpose, but don’t let the pressure mount above 2000 psi. Any pressure level above this can possibly corrode the mortar deposits.

Step 2

Once the wall is dry, begin removing loose paint spots on the surface. Avoid using wire brush for this step instead use sandpaper (80 grit). After removing the paint, check if the surface has damaged or missing mortar. If any, fix the patch immediately with acrylic mortar and paint it when it dries.

Step 3

In order to provide a proper finish to the surface, make sure that all the bricks are primed. For this step, use good quality acrylic masonry primer. The base primer coat will take about 2 hours to completely dry. In case the surface has slips or mildews, cover the area with an extra coat and let the whole surface dry accurately.

Step 4

Areas near doors, window and chimney caps can be a common opening for letting water in. Firstly, clean such openings and then immediately caulk the area. Use genuine acrylic caulk for smaller cracks while the bigger ones will require a foam backer rod.

Step 5

Acrylic latex paints are recommended for exterior house painting. These paints are durable and protect the walls from weather damage for years. For better and long-lasting results use thick roller or heavy brush, so that all wall ends are covered with appropriate paint coat.
