Alaska Native Science & Engineering Facility, University of Alaska Anchorage

The Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP) involves a comprehensive suite of high school outreach, recruitment, university retention and placement strategies designed to help students fulfill their potential in college, sustain their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, and develop an interest in graduate study. The strong form of the architectural composition reflects the ANSEP Program’s functional requirements as well as the incorporation of an abstract allusion to an Alaskan Native canoe. This expression of a Native water vessel represents the current and ancestral housing of culture combined with knowledge, as well as the dreams and aspirations of a younger generation.

Mera Vino Wine Boutique & Lounge, Livermore, CA

Mera Vino Wine Boutique & Lounge...beauty, exquisite, service. These are the three adjectives our Client used to describe his vision for his wine boutique. The space was originally designed for a single-level tenant, although volume and height were generous. Despite complications with ducts, conduits and utility piping cutting through the space, we saw the opportunity to provide our Client a functional layout by stacking and inner-penetrating spaces. Our design solution incorporates a retail area offering views into a transparent wine vault that features varietals in an unpretentious manner. Here, a visitor may peruse our Client’s own personal wine library. Guests then move to a lounge space via floating stair treads divided by LED-illuminated risers, a feature that expresses a layering effect on an otherwise boxy floor plate and juxtaposes fabrics, furniture and finishes to unify an intimate and casual gathering setting.

Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge Visitors Center, Kihei, Hawai`i

This project involved the design and construction of a 7,500 SF energy efficient Headquarters/Visitor Center Building--the Refuge’s permanent administrative office and new visitor’s center with interpretative exhibits and education center for local residents, schools and visitors to the island. The size of the facility is based on the number of refuge staff and projected number of visitors and educational groups. The Refuge anticipated an increase in visitors from 6,000 to approximately 10,000 annually due to the increased visibility of the Refuge afforded by the new facility and the completion of the Mokulele Highway fronting the site. At this time the Visitor Center has already seen a tremendous increase in visitors with February and March counts increasing from 487 in 2011, to 1,350 in 2012. The concept design for the architecture of the facility was developed with the locale and history of Maui in mind. The sensitivity to land (`aina) and appropriate island style designs were addre

Military Family Housing Office, Elmendorf AFB, Alaska

The intent of this design was to develop a management office and maintenance facility that provides direct customer services to DoD members and their families in obtaining and caring for government and community housing. The building shape is manipulated to respond to its inhabitants, as well as to its environment. The sculpting of the warped eastern exterior wall provides grand views of the nearby Chugach Mountains and the raised roof allows sky lighting and an increased visual volume.
