I always tell people that are looking for an attorney to due their due diligence and research about the specific lawyer they want to hire. If you were looking to hire a doctor, you would not just call the first doctor you see on television or in the yellow pages. The same should be true about hiring a lawyer. The process of hiring a lawyer should be something that is taken very seriously. I always tell people to focus on three primary things when looking to hire a personal injury lawyer.
First, you should look at the lawyer's knowledge and experience. Try to learn about prior cases the lawyer has handled that are similar to yours. The focus is not so much on the monetary value of prior settlements themselves, but whether the attorney has a track record of favorable outcomes handling cases that are most similar to yours. Second, I would tell someone looking to hire a personal injury lawyer that they should hire an attorney who practices exclusively in the area of personal injury. I believe that an attorney who practices exclusively in his or her chosen practice area will know that area of the law better than one who practices across multiple areas. Lastly, I would tell someone to hire an attorney that you like as a person in general. You should not hire an attorney simply because they have an abrasive attitude and you feel that is how an attorney should act. You should hire someone who treats your problem like their own, someone that you believe has your best interest at heart, and someone you can see yourself communicating with and getting along with throughout the litigation process.
